Students participate greatly in their education in business schools. The full-time MBA is compensated for by the recipient who also has the opportunity cost of failing to work. The benefits and risks they encounter are significant. At business schools the part-time MBAs are over 2 years and are usually sponsored by the student’s employer. The borrower is less at risk; they continue to be paid, and their career persists upon completion of their MBA.
Career counseling and support is critical for full-time students in these business schools. The student needs to fully understand the level of support they will receive throughout their course as the cost of all the other components of the programs squeezes the course budget. The employers are suspicious (scared?) of any career advice on the part-time MBA, lest the students walk away upon completion of the MBA.
The above phases are just three instances of where job therapy is effective. Several individuals are lucky to have access to successful therapy. You may have a parent or parents who take an interest in promoting their children into a path that fits them. There is sometimes a trainer or a coach who has unique supportive expertise. Nonetheless, for most, the job problem is not prominent until at key moments it lurches into existence-when one finishes school or university or when the Masters is done.
Such moments are obvious because they are at stages of “rite of passage” in our life or where we may have made a key decision to invest in our profession. What would happen if jobs in those main periods were more important to our learning experiences?
The best career counseling is obtained through an appreciation of an individual’s strengths. This is often well understood in a school context by the teaching community, as they regularly work with the students in an academic, pastoral and ex curricula way. We often periodically test for input from students and parents, as well as from appropriate external bodies. There is the wherewithal to give good career advice. Many schools aren’t equipped with the money.
The main issue seems to be that we as a culture do not regard professions as an important topic. Whether it is in schools or working people who carry out (rather than controlling) careers in their careers, there is a lack of value. Many people do take constructive steps and fall into two categories loosely-they are in pain and distress because they have lost their jobs or are bored and frustrated, because they feel they have to get out of what they do.
Taking care of your job is a duty that lasts for ever. The sooner we can value that notion and learn how to take care of it, the better it will be for one’s work life as a whole.
